Overview

Graduates who have a recognised Bachelor’s degree in a subject area such as English, mathematics, drama, history, geography, business studies, economics, law, science (any) or theology* can transition into secondary teaching by completing the Master of Secondary Teaching at The University of Notre Dame Australia. The degree can be completed in as little as 18 months, which includes a significant practical teaching component and the opportunity to teach one or more specialist subjects.


Why study this degree?

  • Do you hold a bachelor’s degree and want to be qualified as a secondary school teacher? This Master of Secondary Teaching degree is designed to help you make that transition and can be completed over eighteen months of full-time study (2yr FTE). Once completed, you will be qualified to teach Years 7 to 12.
  • We have designed this degree program so that you can combine your studies with existing work and family commitments. Most of the classes at our Broadway site are taught in the evenings or on weekends. Like all the Education degrees offered by The University of Notre Dame Australia, the Master of Secondary Education has a strong practical teaching component. In this degree, you will spend a total of 14 weeks gaining in-the-classroom experience.
  • The degree gives you the option of selecting one or teaching areas to pursue and allows for electives and the possibility of a specialisation in an area such as Inclusive Education amongst others.
  • The teaching areas on offer at Notre Dame are:
  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Geography
  • Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics)
  • Studies of Religion
  • Drama
  • History (Modern & Ancient)
  • Business Studies
  • In addition, you will be required to enrol in and pay to sit the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE). Students must pass both the literacy and numeracy components of the test before they progress to Year Two of this program.

  • Engage appropriately and effectively with parents and caregivers and other educational stakeholders to inform responses to education priorities.
