Overview

THEATRE

DEGREE: B.S.

Take classes, participate in University productions or contribute to one of our many related clubs on campus with Millersville University's theatre program.

WHY STUDY THIS PROGRAM?

Theatre is offered as one of the four concentrations of study within the Department of Communications & Theatre at Millersville University. Enriching the liberal arts mission of both the department and the University, the theatre program contributes in a number of significant ways to the “creative campus” atmosphere encouraged at the 'Ville. The goal of the program is to provide undergraduate preparation that balances academic training in theatre fundamentals with production work in a variety of styles in order to equip students with a broad background in the arts.

Graduates have pursued rewarding jobs as technical and design technicians, production staff members, contractors, crew and cast members, including a variety of singers, dancers and actors.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

As a student in this program, traditional academic coursework in the classroom is combined with practical experience through participation in productions on campus. Students receive academic preparation and training in theatre fundamentals, such as performance and production work including acting, directing, scenic design, costume, makeup, lighting and sound. The department produces three main-stage shows annually; rotating play selections to represent all of the major historical periods, Shakespeare, American classics, contemporary plays and musicals. Advanced students with an interest and talent may have the opportunity to direct or design a major production as a part of the University Theatre season or as a special project.

The Department of Communication & Theatre takes pride in the opportunities students have to pursue educational activities beyond the classroom. Many students participate in internships or cooperative education programs through the University, such as the Fulton Opera House (a historic theatre in downtown Lancaster). Students report that these experiences have helped them to successfully enter the workforce after graduation.
