Overview
APPLIED MATHEMATICS
The Applied Mathematics option prepares students to apply a mathematics background to a wide variety of fields.
WHY STUDY THIS PROGRAM?
The Applied Mathematics option is designed to give students a focus in those areas of mathematics used most often in applications. The program is designed to prepare students for jobs applying mathematics to other fields or for graduate study. This option, which is housed within the Mathematics department, is taught by high quality faculty who have expertise in this area.
The Applied Mathematics option can be applied to any of the Mathematics degrees at Millersville including a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics or a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.). The Department also offers minors in mathematics and statistics.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
The Applied Mathematics option is intended to prepare students for work in a wide variety of non-mathematics fields including research, health and medical technology, software, energy, environmental studies and more, as well as for graduate study. The program covers all aspects of the field before delving deeper into specific applied mathematics courses. Students enrolled in any of the B.A., B.S. or B.S.Ed. programs may apply the Applied Mathematics option by including specific courses to fulfill their major.
All mathematics courses are taught by full-time, dedicated mathematics professors, all of whom hold a doctoral degree and have diverse interests in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and mathematics education. Faculty members are highly engaged in scholarly activities in their field.
Many majors complete independent research projects, working one-on-one with professors. These are often completed as part of a student’s senior honors thesis for either departmental honors or as part of the University’s Honors College requirements.
The student-staffed Mathematics Assistance Center (MAC) is a tutoring center that provides free drop-in tutoring for mathematics courses, from introductory mathematics and statistics courses through the calculus sequence. The MAC operates during both daytime and evening hours.
