About the International Foundation Programme

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is designed for students who have completed high school or partial university education overseas and need additional support to prepare for a successful transition into academic studies at bachelor’s level at London Metropolitan University.

Why study the International Foundation Programme (IFP)?

The International Foundation Programme will help you to:

  • develop English language skills as necessary for academic studies
  • prepare for Level 4 (bachelor’s) study through the acquisition of academic skills and knowledge
  • develop as an independent, reflective learner
  • develop effective self-management and personal awareness skills
  • become equipped with subject knowledge critical for successful higher education study
  • become an active user of learning technologies widely used in the UK higher education environment

What is the duration of the International Foundation Programme?

This is a two-semester-long programme, with each semester lasting 15 weeks. You can apply now to get started with the International Foundation Programme. 

What are the entry requirements for the International Foundation Programme?

The entry requirements for the International Foundation Programme are:

  • completion of a Secure English Language Test that meets the English language requirements for the International Foundation Programme
  • successful completion of senior high school or equivalent
  • successful evidence of educational achievement in the country of origin equivalent to a UK Year 12 (leaving certificate is required)

If you're from a majority English-speaking country you may be exempt from the language requirement.

What is the course structure for the International Foundation Programme?

The International Foundation Programme contains two modules: Academic Preparation Programme Part 1 (60 credits) and Academic Preparation Programme Part 2 (60 credits)

Both modules are core for all IFP pathways for the following subjects:

  • Accounting, economics and finance
  • Business and management
  • Computing and IT
  • Criminology
  • Education (excluding early childhood studies)
  • Electronic and computer network engineering
  • Film and television production/studies
  • Health and social care
  • Journalism
  • Law
  • Media, marketing and communications
  • Politics and international relations
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Travel, tourism and events management

English language requirements for the International Foundation Programme

If you are an international student who needs a Student visa (previously Tier 4), you'll be required to take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in order to study with us. These requirements apply to all applicants that are not of majority English speaking nationality as defined by the UK Home Office, or those who do not possess a degree awarded, studied and conferred in a majority English speaking country.

If you're starting an International Foundation Programme with us, the following Secure English Language Test (SELT) minimum scores are required:


UKVI IELTS

Overall score of 5.0 with no less than 4.5 in each component


Please note, the test must be taken at a UKVI approved centre.


Pearson PTE (UKVI)

Overall score of 51 with no less than 51 in each component


Please note we no longer accept the online version of Pearson Test of English (PTE), this has to be completed in person to be considered.
