Bs in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy Administration Major

Pharmacy Administration focuses on the business of pharmacy healthcare. Students are prepared in the foundational sciences of pharmacy, including pharmacology and medicinal chemistry, in addition to anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biology, physics, and calculus. However, the curriculum in the junior and senior years of the program focuses on the healthcare landscape and the business of healthcare, along with foundational business classes including economics, management, marketing, finance, sales, business statistics and analysis, accounting, organizational behavior, and an industry-based internship.

Most students earn one or more minor degrees from the College of Business Administration and Innovation in addition to the BS degree. These minor degrees may include a Business Administration Minor; Professional Sales Minor; International Business Minor; Business Administration Minor and Professional Sales Minor; International Business Minor and Business Administration Minor; Business Administration Minor and MBA Track; Professional Sales/Business Administration Minors and MBA Track; and International Business/Business Administration Minors and MBA Track. The MBA track coursework allows students to complete up to 24 credits of graduate coursework toward the MBA degree as an undergraduate.

Students also have the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in Health Outcomes and Socioeconomic Sciences, a unique program offered to BSPS students at The University of Toledo interested in focusing on patient and population healthcare outcomes, comparative effectiveness research, economic outcomes of drug and disease management, and the social and behavioral influences of patient and healthcare provider interaction.  

Student learning outcomes:

  1. Apply knowledge of current societal trends to describe the regional, national, and global healthcare landscape.
  2. Detect the trends in national healthcare delivery, and assess the drivers of and barriers to healthcare utilization.
  3. Generate a business plan for a project or program designed to meet the needs of a contemporary pharmacy or healthcare opportunity.
  4. Design business strategies to successfully manage human and capital resources in the provision of healthcare services.
  5. Analyze the economic forces at play in healthcare, and evaluate the direction for profitability in the industry given health policy and legislative constraints.
  6. Evaluate the career opportunities available to BSPS Pharmacy Administration candidates, and create a plan for networking and marketability of yourself following graduation.

Career Opportunities

Pharmacy Administration graduates are often employed by chain and independent community pharmacies as store managers or regional/division managers, by hospitals and health systems as directors of departments or divisions, or in data analysis. Graduates are also employed by the pharmaceutical and device industries as sales representatives, in finance or marketing divisions, or in regulatory affairs. Graduates are also employed by the healthcare insurance industry, government, pharmaceutical research and contract research organizations, and long-term care industry.
